On this matter lawyers might be liberal, but doctors could be dogmatic. Efforts by women to enter the medical schools as equals started as early as 1870, at a time when they could already receive instruction but not take degrees. A riot at Surgeons’ Hall in Edinburgh followed a sustained campaign of harassment and bullying by male students, who swore at the female candidates in public and sent them obscene letters. In an effort to stop them sitting an exam, 200 undergraduates, with the blessing of some members of staff, blocked the entrance to the hall. The leader of the women, Sophia Jex-Blake, described the scene: ’We walked straight up to the gates [which] were slammed in our faces by a number of young men, who stood within, smoking and passing about bottles of whisky, while they abused us in the foulest possible language.’32 The janitors had to elbow the louts aside and let the women in.
